What Is Potassium Hydroxide

Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) is commonly known as caustic potash, potassium ash, etc. Industrial products mainly have two forms, namely, solid and liquid, wherein the solid is white or light gray flake or stick, and the liquid potassium hydroxide is light yellow liquid. Potassium Hydroxide Uses

  1. Potassium hydroxide is mainly used as raw material for potassium salt production, such as potassium permanganate, potassium carbonate, etc.

  2. Potassium Hydroxide in the pharmaceutical industry, it is used to produce potassium borohydride, spironolactone, salbutamol, progesterone, testosterone propionate, etc.

Potassium hydroxide can cauterize tissues, dissolve proteins, and form basic denatured proteins. If the solution or dust splashes on the skin, especially on the mucous membrane, it can produce soft scabs. The higher the solution concentration and temperature, the stronger the effect. Splashing into the eye can not only damage the cornea, but also damage the deep tissue of the eye. The maximum allowable concentration is 0.5mg/m3. Avoid touching the skin and eyes during work.   1. The raw potassium chloride of diaphragm electrolysis method is dissolved into a saturated solution in the salt dissolving tank. When heated to 90 ℃, potassium carbonate, caustic potassium and barium chloride are added respectively to remove impurities such as calcium, magnesium and sulfate. The potassium chloride solution containing 280 ~ 315g/L of potassium chloride, neutralized by hydrochloric acid and refined by sedimentation and deslagging, is preheated to 70 ~ 75 ℃ for electrolysis to obtain potassium hydroxide, chlorine and hydrogen chemicalbook. The concentration of potassium hydroxide obtained by diaphragm method is 10%~11%, which needs to be concentrated by evaporation and clarified by cooling to prepare potassium hydroxide solution containing 45%~50%; It can also be concentrated in the alkali boiling pot and decolorized to obtain solid potassium hydroxide or flaked potassium hydroxide products.   2. The preparation of electrolyte for mercury electrolysis is the same as that for diaphragm electrolysis. In the electrolytic chamber, graphite (or metal) is used as the anode and mercury as the cathode. Most unreacted potassium chloride is treated in light brine and returned to the raw material dissolution process.
